Hair Loss > Causes

Main Hair Loss Causes

In men, genes, hormones and age are the three main factors that cause hair loss, called Androgenetic Alopecia.

This type of Alopecia, affects solely the frontal and superior part of the head, leaving the sides and back part intact.

The DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) Hormone, goes from the testicles to the blood, and from the blood, to the hair roots, it affects the genetically receptive follicles, weakening them progressively until they are thinner, shorter and more fragile. At this point, the hair can be extinguished completely.

Same as with men, the DHT hormone, seems to be, partly, the cause of the miniturization of the hair follicles in women that suffer from alopecia. Inheritance plays an important role in the disease.

Most of the women that suffer Androgenetic Alopecia, show a diffuse slimming in all the areas of the scalp. While men, rarely have a diffuse slimming in the hair, instead they have distinctive patterns of baldness. Some women can even have a combination of two types of pattern. .

Hepatopathies:

In some cases, there may be an alteration in the production of proteins transporting sexual hormones, increasing the quantity of free testosterone with an increase in the conversion process of this hormone into DHT that produces androgenetic alopecia:

  • Thyroid disorder: Wether an excessive increase of thyroid hormone levels (hyperthyroidism) as well as a reduction of thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism) may cause alopecia. Hair loss associated to a thyroid disease may be reverted with an appropriate treatment.
  • Idiopathic Alterationa: Without apparent cause, with normal hormonal levels but with genetic predisposition.

Both have to be treated, and successful therapy depends on directing a treatment at the underlying causes of hair loss and at the same time getting the appropriate medical treatment prescribed by specialists.

Otras causas

Every kind of alopecia has a identifiable pattern that recovery specialists can easily recognize, and according to the type, a suitable treatment has to be applied in order to fix it in an effective way. We can make the following classification:

  • Congenital: This is rare, there is no hair since birth.
  • Acquired Non-scarring: Provoked by the loss of hair, but not the follicle, in some cases it can be regenerated. Some subdivisions are:
    • Alopecia areata (autoimmune, caused by physical or mental stress. Can be one patch or generalized all over the scalp).
    • Hormonal (thyroids, ovaries, hypopheses, suprarenal).
    • Nutritional deficiencies (proteic-energetic malnutrition, fatty acids, iron, zinc, biotin)
  • Acquired Cicatricial: occurs as a consequence of growth disorders and hereditary diseases, infectious processes, neoplasm, chemical / physical agents (radiotherapy, traumatisms, etc) This form of Alopecia is caused by loss of the hair follicle. It is irreversible unless through surgery.
